The unborn Mystearica Aura Fende and her brother Vandesdelca began their life with their parents on Hod Island, a quiet area in the Outter Lands. The Fende family had close ties to Hod's noble family of Gardios; Van's father was a knight who served Gardios. Van was, in fact, a friend to young Gailardia Galan Gardios, later known as Guy Cecil.

However, fomicry experiments were being conducted on Hod in an attempt to create weapons to gain leverage in the Kimlasca-Malkuth war at the time. An eleven-year-old Van and his abilities as a Seventh Fonist were used in an experiment to create an artificial hyperresonance. The resulting hyperresonance was so powerful that it destroyed the Sephiroth that kept Hod aloft, pitching the town into the Qliphoth. All were killed except Van and his mother, who survived by his using a Fonic Hymn. They made their way to Yulia City, the only city in the Qliphoth, and were taken in by Teodoro of Yulia. Soon after Tear was born her mother died, leaving the siblings in Teodoro's care. He took the siblings in and raised them as his own.

Tear: The Isle of Hod was Malkuth land, destroyed in the Hod War 16 years ago. It was our home. Hod fell into the Qliphoth just like Akzeriuth. Van and my mother, who was pregnant with me, fell into the Qliphoth. Van probably used a fonic hymn.

As fate would have it, the destruction of their hometown affected Tear and Van quite differently. While Tear moved on, Van became obsessed with what had happened. Finding out that Hod's fate had been predetermined in the Score - and that all who knew it did nothing to stop it from happening - only provoked him. He quickly lost faith in Yulia's preachings and all those who followed them. Outside of Tear's knowledge, he began to plot revenge.

Tear: Van hated the Score. He was always talking about it (...) He'd (...) say he could never forgive a world that let Hod die.

Eventually, Tear joined the Order of Lorelei, and as a cadet trained under Legretta the Quick, one of the Six God-Generals of the Order. She achieved the level of Locrian Sergeant in the Oracle Knights, and her knighthood shaped her as a person: calm, collected and nearly unemotional, she adheres to the strict discipline of a soldier in all areas of her life.

One day, Tear overheard Van speaking of a plan to destroy the people of the Outter Lands. Tear couldn't deny her brother's evil intentions and secretly planned to go after him. As a cover, she took on the task of finding the Seventh Fonstone for Grand Maestro Mohs, all the while preparing herself for the possibility of having to kill her own brother - as well as being killed herself - to save the inhabitants of the world above and below.

(...) Tear had decided to follow Master Van and stop him, even at the cost of her own life.
- from the journal of Luke fone Fabre

Soon Tear learns of her brother's whereabouts: Duke Fabre's home in Baticul. She sneaks into the mansion, using her Fonic Hymns to put the guards and servants to sleep. In the courtyard, she spots her brother engaged in a duel with a young man - Luke fon Fabre - and begins to sing her Fonic Hymn to put them all to sleep. But Van recognises her voice and resists, so Tear steps forth and reveals herself and her goal: to kill Van.

Tear charges Van but Luke interfers, and an amazing and unexpected thing happens: Tear and Luke create a hyperresonance as their Seventh Fonons clash and react. Both are pitched into a land far away, together and alone. And thus begins the start of their true journey.
